Rather unexpectedly, Maureen Dodd found herself caring for 5 abandoned kittens. While out for a walk, her family came across the kittens, alone and in need of care. Luckily, Maureen is a self-described cat lover and jumped into action. With help from her friend, they cared for the kittens- feeding, cleaning, and attending to kitten antics- but Maureen recognized they needed expert, long-term support. Through a recommendation, she connected with Cannonsville Critters, a Montcalm County cat rescue that provides care for abandoned, abused, or neglected cats and kittens. The nonprofit took in the kittens and started their rehabilitation.

Maureen considers this “an unfortunate fortunate story,” as the outlook for the kittens is hopeful. For nonprofits like Cannonsville Critters, providing services to vulnerable animals can be a financial challenge. Thankfully, funding from GACF has provided a critical source of support. The Ernest E. & Joyce E. Latreille Caring for Animals Fund was established to provide grants to Montcalm County area nonprofits supporting the welfare of animals. The fund has awarded proactive grants to Cannonsville Critters, bridging the gap when unexpected expenses occur. As the nonprofit’s founders, Tom and Michelle Hocking can attest to the importance of this support.

“We are always in need,” Tom shares, “(Funding) showed up, at a time, when we were being required to become registered with the State of Michigan as a shelter. We had to make modifications in order to meet the requirements.”

This instance illustrates the role of grant funding, enabling nonprofits to adapt, grow, and address community needs effectively.

And as for the kittens, Tom reports things are looking better. “They are doing great! It’s not always the case when they come in that shape. To see them flea free, happy, playing and eating like they should is why we do what we do.”

As GACF celebrates its 35th anniversary, we bring together the collective stories of donors, nonprofits, students, and community members to demonstrate the power of philanthropy in creating lasting impact and a stronger future.
