“The best gift we can give a child is a well-prepared parent.”

Karen Marsman, Executive Director of Alpha Family Services, wants to help families thrive. Alpha’s parenting program uses a hands-on approach to equip parents with the knowledge and skills necessary for raising healthy, safe families. Many of Alpha’s clients belong to the ALICE population (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed), meaning purchasing essential safety items often isn’t feasible. But through Alpha’s program, local families can earn these items, ensuring children have safe sleeping and travel arrangements but also underscoring the organization’s commitment to empowering parents.

To help provide cribs and car seats to multiple families, Alpha applied for and received a grant from GACF. While the grant provided much-needed program support, Alpha Family Services recognized that they needed a more sustainable solution.

Karen had recently heard Alison Barberi, GACF President/ CEO share about endowments, so during a strategic planning meeting, Alpha discussed the sustainability of the organization and the importance of planning for the future. Starting an endowed fund with GACF seemed like the right choice to ensure their long-term viability.

“The fund opens up new avenues for soliciting donations,” Karen shares, highlighting how it enhances Alpha Family Services’ financial stability and broadens their community outreach. She emphasizes the importance of community foundations, wishing more people recognized their vital role: “They provide essential financial resources that empower organizations to deliver services and support that wouldn’t be possible otherwise. They are invaluable partners in our community. We truly are stronger together.”

As GACF celebrates its 35th anniversary, we bring together the collective stories of donors, nonprofits, students, and community members to demonstrate the power of philanthropy in creating lasting impact and a stronger future.
