Through an inspiring collaboration, a unique $1 million endowed fund was established to enhance healthcare for children in Montcalm County. This initiative originated in 2005 when, following a settlement, Greenville’s hospital reached an agreement with the United States Attorney’s Office. The terms of the agreement allowed the hospital to use the final installment of a fine as a matching grant- a pivotal decision that led to the creation of an endowment fund supporting healthcare services for local children.

The community’s response was swift and generous. The Meijer Foundation was first to respond, committing to match all contributions up to $250,000. To honor this significant support, the fund was named the Fred and Lena Meijer Children’s Health Care Fund. Additional contributions came from both the hospital foundation and the Greenville Area Community Foundation (GACF), bolstering the matching effort. Later on, the Grand Rapids Community Foundation recognized Fred and Lena Meijer with the 2006 Jack Chaille Award, providing a $5,000 grant for a nonprofit of their choice, further enriching the fund. Held by GACF, the new fund balance reached $1,000,000 and could start awarding grants.

Nearly two decades later, the Meijer Children’s Health Care Fund has made a substantial impact, distributing over $785,000 to various community healthcare programs. A local advisory committee reviews grant requests and makes funding recommendations- addressing diverse needs, from maternal health to personal body safety instruction. The fund is a silver lining, highlighting the power of collaboration and ensuring ongoing support for the health and well-being of children in Montcalm County.
