What started as a simple reunion of classmates turned into an idea that’s now helping future graduates. In the spring of 2020, a group from the Lakeview High School Class of 1977 reconnected to share memories and catch up on life. During their conversations, the idea of creating a scholarship fund for LHS graduates was tossed around. By May 2020, the LHS Alumni Scholarship Fund became a reality.
At first, the scholarship committee set a goal to raise $10,000. But to broaden their impact, they turned to crowdfunding and asked the community to get involved. With giving challenges and seasonal donation drives, community gifts have raised over $30,000, allowing the fund to award 2-3 scholarships to LHS graduates each year.
Todd Lincoln is a member of the LHS Class of 1977 and has been part of the scholarship committee from the start. He is proud of the way the community has supported the fund. “The one thing that we would like people to know is that you don’t need to be wealthy to contribute to these funds and make a difference in the lives of the graduating seniors,” he said, “Gifts of any size are always appreciated.”
But for Todd, the best part of the experience is awarding scholarships to students.
“The proudest moments are when our committee is able to stand before a group of new LHS grads with their families and the entire community and announce the recipients of the awards,” he shared, “It is the beginning to a successful future. It is a great feeling to be able to give back and see young people begin their career path.”
