“No matter what happens in life, there are two things that no one can ever take away from you…your hard work and your heart.”

Jamison Lafferty regularly heard this advice and applied it to his life. He lived every day to the fullest, working hard at school and sports, while exuding compassion, grace, and faith with others. When Jamison tragically passed away, the love he had always shown continued to bring light to his family and friends in insurmountable ways. In a most difficult time, the Lafferty family received a flood of love and resources from the community and beyond. “Jacket Strong” became an expression of solidarity and support, a phrase reflecting not only Jamison’s spirit, but also a display of hope and strength amid tragedy.

Jamison’s parents, Justin and Alee Lafferty, were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support. “There will never be enough words in the world to explain our gratitude toward everyone who has supported us and loved us since losing our sweet boy,” Alee shared.

And the support hasn’t stopped.

Wanting to honor Jamison and give back to the community, the Lafferty’s worked with GACF to establish the Jacket Strong Scholarship Fund-In Memory of Jamison Lafferty. Donations came from individuals, families, schools, and local businesses. The inaugural Jacket Strong Golf Outing raised over $17,500 for the fund. “We owe it all to our community and to the grace and goodness of God,” Alee states.

As the fund continues to grow, Justin and Alee reflect on their vision for the scholarship. “Jamison didn’t have the opportunity to graduate from high school, go on to college, and earn a degree. The Jacket Strong Scholarship – In Memory of Jamison Lafferty is a way to carry on his legacy, for graduates that embody ‘Hard Work and Heart’ like our son always did.”

The first scholarship was awarded this spring to Colin Harrison, a member of Greenville High School’s Class of 2024. The endowed fund will provide annual scholarships in perpetuity, ensuring lasting support for future students. Recognizing the scholarship’s impact, Justin and Alee view it as a symbol of hope, sharing a meaningful verse from the Bible that reflects this sentiment: “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11).

As the community continues to embrace “Jacket Strong,” we’re reminded that through our unity, hope remains.

As GACF celebrates its 35th anniversary, we bring together the collective stories of donors, nonprofits, students, and community members to demonstrate the power of philanthropy in creating lasting impact and a stronger future.
