Fred Plath likes to talk baseball. He likes to be outside. And he really likes to invest in his community with his work through the Montcalm Panhandle Community Fund (MPCF).
A Howard City accountant by day, Plath is also founder of the MPCF, has served on the advisory committee for 25 years, and is current Chair.
It is an effort he is proud of. “It will provide positive benefits in our local community for generations to come,” said the Montcalm County native. “I am most proud of the fact that our general fund, since its inception, has been able to disburse over $100,000 in grant awards to nearly 20 different organizations within the Montcalm panhandle.”
Those funds have been spread to libraries, elementary schools, sports boosters, fire departments, community organizations, and more.
Plath said he’s always surprised by how many people are unaware of the fund, despite its widespread impact in the community. The fund has supported everything from a veteran’s memorial, restrooms, bike racks and benches along walkways to take-home books for local children, a breathing apparatus for firefighters, and a walk-in freezer for a food pantry. Those are just a snapshot of the diverse contributions the fund has made to northwest Montcalm County.
“With our new, expanded group of directors, we are excited about the opportunity for more people to learn about our fund and the potential that it has to improve the quality of life in our community,” he said. “Get involved in supporting the MPCF. Help to create a legacy.”
The MPCF is working diligently to strengthen and expand involvement in the four-township area it serves: Maple Valley, Pierson, Reynolds, and Winfield. As GACF celebrates its 35th anniversary, we bring together the collective stories of donors, nonprofits, students, and community members to demonstrate the power of philanthropy in creating lasting impact and a stronger future.
