Olivia loves playing the violin. As a member of her school orchestra, she was excited about the possibility of attending Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, where she could spend two weeks focused on violin. Thanks in part to a scholarship from the Gary Wakenhut Memorial Scholarship Fund, Olivia was able to attend the camp and develop her musical talents.

Before receiving the scholarship, Olivia worried about the cost of camp. “I wasn’t sure if I could earn the money on my own at my age,” she admits. The scholarship eased this concern, making it possible for her to attend. Olivia encourages other students to apply for scholarships, noting how easy it is to apply.

The Gary Wakenhut Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Anne (Wakenhut) VanWitsen in memory of her late husband Gary. Both Anne and Gary were music campers during their high school years and remained involved musicians throughout their lives. This scholarship fund reflects a commitment to nurturing young talent and ensuring that students in Montcalm County have access to valuable musical experiences.

One of the highlights of Olivia’s camp experience was making friends. “The best part of camp is meeting others my age who also share a passion for music,” she says. At school, Olivia has faced bullying, but at Blue Lake, she found a supportive community where she truly felt she belonged.

Olivia’s time at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp was more than just musical enrichment—it was a chance for personal growth and connection. Her story is a powerful reminder of the positive impact that scholarship funds and camp experiences can have on young individuals.

As GACF celebrates its 35th anniversary, we bring together the collective stories of donors, nonprofits, students, and community members to demonstrate the power of philanthropy in creating lasting impact and a stronger future.
