Elizabeth Gates began teaching at Greenville High School in 1994 and quickly knew it was where she was meant to be. As a young professional and recently single parent of a preschooler, the opportunity felt especially significant. Early on, senior staff encouraged her to pursue her master’s degree. While she had already begun taking classes, time and financial constraints meant moving forward one course at a time. It took until 2002, but she persevered and earned her degree.

During her time at GHS, Elizabeth was invited to contribute to a satirical staff newspaper shared at the annual end-of-year breakfast. She later learned the tradition had been started by John Gates, a GHS administrator. But the newspaper was just one example of John’s creativity and commitment to staff culture.

As assistant principal, John negotiated a vending contract that generated funds for the principal’s account. Rather than using those dollars for general purposes, he chose to invest in his colleagues. He established a scholarship program to support teachers pursuing continued education. Each year, teachers enrolled in graduate coursework received an envelope with a financial gift toward their tuition.

John believed deeply in lifelong learning. He saw teaching not as a static profession, but as one that requires continual growth and adaptation. He understood that in order to meet the evolving needs of students, educators must have opportunities to keep learning, and he was committed to supporting that journey.

John and Elizabeth were married in 2014 and shared many wonderful years together until his unexpected passing in 2025. Over the course of a distinguished 36-year career with Greenville Public Schools, John served in a variety of roles, ultimately retiring as principal of Greenville High School. In honor of his legacy, Elizabeth established the John Gates Memorial Fund to provide financial support to Greenville Public Schools staff for continuing education, innovative experiences, and professional development opportunities. Grants from the fund will be distributed through the Education Foundation of Greenville, carrying forward John’s belief in investing in the educators who make a lasting impact on students and the Greenville community.
