Youth Advisory Council Grants

Proposals that support youth and family programs in our community are given special consideration through the Youth Advisory Councils in Greenville and Lakeview (GYAC and LYAC). Members of these very active and involved groups come from the area high schools & middle schools and are learning first-hand about the importance of community involvement and philanthropy.

YAC Grant Criteria

There are a number of factors that contribute to the decisions involved in the grant making process of the YAC’s. Some of the major considerations include:

  • Number of area youth affected by the grant
  • Area where youth will be most affected by the grant (geographic location)
  • Significance of the grant on area youth
  • Ability of the grant to fulfill the needs of area youth

Decisions about grant funding are based on many factors including the results of a Needs Assessment that is conducted every three years. The following needs were identified by the Greenville Youth Advisory Council (GYAC). Identified needs were put into a survey that was taken by Greenville students grades 6-12 through an online service.

Needs Assessment Identified needs were ranked as follows:

  1. Confidence and self-esteem issues in girls (53%)
  2. Poor performance in school (48%)
  3. Health and wellness issues (35%)
  4. Teen driver safety (35%)
  5.  Hunger or food insecurity (34%)
  6. Substance Abuse (30%)
  7. Teen pregnancy (27%)
  8. Dating Violence (26%)
  9. Access to recreation (24%)
  10. Homelessness (20%)


At the end of the needs assessment, students were asked to list additional needs they felt were not identified in the survey.  The issue of school climate and bullying was mentioned by many respondents.

GACF BOARD VARIANCE POWER: The GACF Board shall have the power to modify any restriction or condition on the distribution of funds for any specified charitable purposes or to specified organizations if in the sole judgment of the board (without the approval of any trustee, custodian or agent), such restriction or condition becomes, in effect, unnecessary, incapable of fulfillment or inconsistent with the charitable needs of the community or area served.
