For Immediate Release: June 5, 2012
The first Lincoln Family Adult Scholarship was awarded to Marlene “Patsy” Alvera last week on Honors Night in the Lakeview High School gymnasium. This scholarship was set up by the Dallas & Nancy Lincoln family to help an adult from the Lakeview community that for whatever reason finds themselves in a position to go back to college to continue his/her education. Patsy, as she is known, applied in April for the $500 award. She has lived in the area for 22 years and had been laid off from her position with Lakeview Community Schools for the second time in June 2011. After being out of school for 34 years, going back was daunting to Patsy but she is persevering. She attends Montcalm Community College and has a 3.7 GPA. She is studying accounting and hopes that soon she’ll be able to contribute to family finances once again.
The Lincoln Family was very happy to be have the scholarship fund endowed with the Lakeview Area Community Fund (LACF) which is affiliated with the Greenville Area Community Foundation (GACF). The family had first hand knowledge of the difficulties associated with finding scholarships for adults who go back to school later in life and were so pleased to award the first Lincoln Family Adult Scholarship to someone who had worked so hard for so many years and is excited about a new career.
